Purchasing Materials
All of the material
used in this system can be purchased at your local home store. The
shrink material kits are usually found in the window screen repair
section and window/door sealing and insulation area. When I purchase
the shrink film, I try to buy a box with one large piece of film
material, such as a kit used for sliding patio doors. This is usually
the best buy for the money, although you will have to cut the film
to fit the approximate size of your window.
Notice
that the top box in the picture at left includes one piece of shrink
film, while the bottom box has 5 pieces. If you like you can purchase
the individual sizes as shown in the bottom box, either will work,
but the larger size gives more flexibility in installation on odd
sized windows
The shrink material
kit available in your area may be packed differently or made by
a different manufacture. This material is usually less than
ten dollars and will seal several windows
The
aluminum screen repair extrusion can be found in the window screen
repair section. This material is supplied in usually three colors:
Brown, White and Natural Aluminum. I try to buy the color that matches
the window frame or the window jamb color. You will also need some
small flat headed nails or brads and a tube of clear caulk, along
with the window repair retainer spline. The spline comes in several
sizes measured in thousandths of an inch. The spline needs to be
a fairly tight fit in the extrusion spline groove. Usually a spline
size of about 0.130 is about right. You may
have to purchase several sizes to get the size that will be easy
to install, yet hold the film tight enough to withstand the air
pressure against the film
